Blog Post #52 "Down River"

If you were Tally, would you ask the Warden to make you a pretty.

Yes, because it is the only way to know if the pills would work.

Blog Post #51 "Confessions"

Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?

No, I don't think she will. No, I don't think he will.

Blog Post #50 "Hippocratic Oath"

Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the "cure?" Why or why not?

No, because Maddy doesn't know if it will work and if I were Shay I wouldn't want to take it because it could kill you.

Blog Post #49 "Night Alone"

If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not?

Yes, because I would still want to be me not someone else.

Blog Post #48 "Get Away"

Respond to the following quote from the chapter.... What does it mean to you? "Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

The lesions changed her personality. She is not who she used to be.

Blog Post #47 "Rescue"

Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter.

1. David and Tally find Shay in the Special Circumstances building.
2. Tally finds that Shay is drunk.
3. Shay changed her mind on being a Smokie because of the brain lesions.
4. Dr. Cable comes in and is hit in the head by David.
5. David wants to save his Dad but Mom says no.
6. They are escape.
7. David finds out his Dad is dead.
The kicker at the end is David finds out his Dad is dead.

Blog Post #46 "Inside"

Is this quote a play on words or does it have a deeper meaning to the story?
"Radiology. Neurology. Magnetic Imaging," she read softly. "Operating Theatre Two."

I think it has a deeper meaning in the story.

What "labels" do Tally & David find in the Special Circumstances Building? Give a BRIEF description of what you think each means.

Radiology: They give the specials radiation treatment that gives them their superhuman side?
Neurology: Where they take the brain lesions out of the Specials so they can think right?
Magnetic Imaging: Where they make sure the lesions are not still there?
Operating Theatre Two: Where they give the Specials their Pretty-Ugly looks?

Describe Shay's appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.

"Tall and elegant, every feature perfection, eyes deep and soulful flecked with copper and gold, widened with a troubled look, broad smile illuminating the darkness.

Blog Post #45 "Over the Edge"

In this chapter, a few uglies go to New Pretty Town to do a trick. They make the words "THE SMOKE LIVES" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be and why?

Hello People!!!! I would say that because there is nothing else I would really say.

Blog Post #44 "Accomplices"

The Uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beginning of the book. When you compare her to these Uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?

I think she has changed a lot and has gotten more mature and stuff like that. I think she has changed because she met David.

Blog Post #43 "Familiar Sights"

Do you think Tally's plan will work? David wants to save his parents, but what's driving Tally? Do you think she's crazy, or are her feelings valid?

I think it will work. She wants to keep David's trust so he will like her. Yes I think she is crazy.

Blog Post #42 "Oil Plague"

How do David & Tally describe the Rusties? Is it accurate?

They call the Rusties pretty much big idiots and that they didn't know what they were doing. It is definently not accurate.

What are weaknesses of OUR society?

We pollute the air too much and we go to war too often. We are going to end up getting ourselves killed.

What are the weaknesses in THEIR society?

They rely too much on electronics. If they had a huge power outage, they would all die.

Blog Post #41 "Maddy and Az"

Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared. Post the information and cite it.

The September 11 attacks (often referred to as September 11th or 9/11) were a series of coordinated suicide attacks by al-Qaeda upon the United States on September 11, 2001. On that morning, 19 al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four commercial passenger jet airliners.[1][2] The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing everyone on board and many others working in the buildings. Both buildings collapsed within two hours, destroying nearby buildings and damaging others. The hijackers crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside Washington, D.C. The fourth plane crashed into a field near Shanksville in rural Pennsylvania after some of its passengers and flight crew attempted to retake control of the plane, which the hijackers had redirected toward Washington, D.C. There were no survivors from any of the flights.

Blog Post #40 "Ruin"

Describe the irony in Tally's victory over Dr. Cable. What was lost in the process?

She was the one who betrayed the Smoke to the Specials. She felt that she has to tell David, but if David knew than he would never trust her again.

Sunday, March 14, 2010

Blog Post #39

Is David right? Is Tally amazing? Do you think she should be feeling guilty? Why or Why not?

No. No. Yes. Because she betrayed the Smoke to the Specials.

Blog Post #38 "Run"

Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or an enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do now?

David is the voice in the dark. A friend. She will run from the Specials with David.

Blog Post #37 "In Case of Damage"

Explain what self preservation means to you. Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?

Self Preservation-when you lie to make yourself appear better than you are.

No, it is not the most important thing.

No, I would not lie because of it.

Blog Post #36 "The Rabbit Pen"

Tally had changed her mind about the Smokeand the Operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?

She will run away from the Specials and never become Pretty.
She is on the Smokies side.

Blog Post #35 "Invasion"

Is this the climax of the book? Explain why or why not in a few sentences.

Yes, because the whole book has been about the Specials trying to find the Smoke and they finally did.

Blog Post #34 "Burning Bridges"

Read the following quote David says to Tally. "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your home life and one in your academic life(you may leave them nameless if you wish)...what makes this person beautiful.

Home- My mom because she is really nice.

Academic-

Blog Post #33 "Pretty Minds"

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/to the the story? "Becoming Pretty doesn't just change the way you look ... it changes the way you think." How would you want to change mentally and physically if you were pretty? (think ... habits, intelligence, and physical attributes.)

I would to have the same habits, attributes, and personality as I did when I was an ugly.

Blog Post #32 "The Secret"

What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general?

"But you do know about genetics don't you? Sure i know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird."

In New Pretty Town, they never look like their parents because their parents had the operation but their genes are still the same as when they were uglies.

Predict what you think being "pretty" is.

It makes people sick.

Blog Post #31 "Bravery"

Find an example of imagery, personification and a simile. Quote directly and give page numbers.

Imagery: "... but real animals from the overcrowded pen on the edge of the Smoke." (pg.243)

Personification: "Dr. Cable's pendant seemed to grow heavier and heavier, wound around her neck as tightly as the vines, brush, and roots grasping the railroad tracks." (pg.243)

Simile: "Without even trying, she'd shafted her best friend. Like a walking poison, she killed everything." (pg.244)

Does it require bravery to meet David's parents? Why or why not?

Yes, because Tally has never seen a middle aged ugly before. She has seen an old ugly but she doesn't know if theyh would look the same.

Blog Post #30 "Suspision"

Do you think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?

No, because if David likes Tally there is nothing Shay can do about that

Tally received a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever received something that made others jealous as this gift did? Did your gift have a speical meaning behind it as Tally's had?

No I have not.

Blog Post #29 "Heartthrob"

Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the Smoke? Explain.

Now she is friends with people in the Smoke and David is trusting her with secrets about the Smoke that he has never told anyone before.

Blog Post #28 "David"

If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away? Support your answer with textual evidence.

They have known that there was something wrong with the operation because they "reversed the operation" (pg. 218).

Blog Post #27 "Work"

Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?

I think it is beautiful because everything is so big. You can't wrap your head around how big everything is. There is a lot of pollution in big cities. So I think that is ugly.

Blog Post #26 "The Model"

What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right? (1 paragraph)

I think it is not very accurate because not everyone is perfectly pretty in our world.
She was right that most models were very skinny.

Blog Post #25 "Lies"

Characterization of David -- He was not a Pretty but he had a nice smile. He was a few years older than Tally. He lives in the Smoke.

4) She is taken to Bald Head.
5) She waits for Shay.

Respond to the following quote: "...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

She had to betray her friend to be able to become Pretty.

Blog Post #23 "Firestorm"

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification & simile.

I
magery: "Billowing clouds of smoke surrounded her, blotting out the sky. A ragged wall of flame moved through the flowers, giving off a blistering heat.

Personification: " The fire was growing stronger. Fingers of it shot up the hill, leaping from one beautiful flower to another, leaving them scorched and black."

Simile: " Her footsteps ignited with flame as she ran through the blackened flowers, like stabbing a poker into a slumbering fire.

Blog Post #22 "The Side You Despise"

What do you think the flying machine was? Who was in it? Make a prediction.

I think it is a helicopter. The fire bug eye people.

Blog Post #21 "The Worst Mistake"

No, I have not.

Predict what you think will happen next.

I think she will find the people with fire ug eyes and they will take her to the Smoke.

Blog Post #20 "Spagbol"

Invent a dried food you would take with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be? How would you make it?

I would make an instant pepporoni pizza. You would take it out of the package and cook it. It would inflate during cooking and it would taste good.

Make a list of things you would miss about your home if you were forced to leave it as Tally was.

1) video games
2) real food
3) TV
4) my pets
5) sodas

Blog Post #19 "Leaving"

So she can become Pretty.

Blog Post #18 "Infiltrator"

Give a chronological list of events that happened in the chapter.

1) Tally accepts the offer to help Special Circumstances find Shay.
2) Dr. Cable gives Tally a heart pendent that is a tracking device for Special Circumstances to find her once she infiltrates the Smoke.

Blog Post #17 "Peris"

Why do you think Peris came back? Support your answer with textual evidence.

To comfort her.

"The thought of what she must llok like was too much. Tally collapsed onto the bed, covering her face with her hands and sobbing. Peris sat next to her and held her for a while as she cried, then wiped her nose and sat her up."

Blog Post # 16 "Ugly for Life"

Respond to the following quote:
"Everywhere she went, eyes looked away. But it was the most visible she'd ever felt."

You know people were looking at you when you look up and they quickly look away. It is very obvious if they were looking at you.

Blog Post #15 "Special Circumstances"

1) Tally meets Dr. Cable, a member of Special Circumstances.
2) Dr. Cable asks Tally some questions about Shay.

4) Dr. Cable also says if Tally doesn't help them then Tally will never be Pretty.

Tally will help them find Shay.

Blog Post 14b "Operation"

Summarize the chapter highlighting the important events in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.

1. The Hospital Car picks her up from the Ugly dorms.
2. She gets dropped off at the hospital.
3. She waits for about an hour in the waiting room.
4. A man tells her there is something wrong with her operation.

I think the man will tell her what is wrong with her operation.

Blog Post #14a "Last Trick"

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you?

"We don't have to look like everyone else, Tally, and act like everyone else. We've got a choice. We can grow up any way we want."

I think it shows that Shay wants her own freedom and doesn't want to be like everyone else.

Blog Post #13 "Fight"

Two fights were presented in this chapter. Compare and contrast both of them; list their similarities and differences. Why did each fight take place? What was the outcome of each?

In the first fight, it was a prank played on the new uglies to scare them. They just to have fun before they became Pretties.

In the second fight, it was not a trick. Shay doesn't want to become Pretty so she gets in a fight with Tally about why Tally wants to become Pretty. Shay tells Tally she is not going to become Pretty.

Blog Post #12 "Waiting for David"

What does the following quote from the chapter tell you about the city?

"That was one thing about being outside the city:It made all that nature stuff they taught in school seem a lot more useful. She remembered now how rainwater fell on the mountains and soaked into the ground..."

The city makes you not able to see the stars and trees and nature things. They teach the Uglies about nature, but they never see it. So what is the point?!!

Blog Post #11 "The Rusty Ruins"

Write a one paragraph summary of the chapter. Tell the important events in chronological order.

1)Tally sneaks out with Shay to go to the Rusty Ruins.
2)Shay and Tally ride the rapids on hoverboards.
3)Shay shows Tally the Rusty Ruins.
4)Shay tricks Tally into riding the roller coaster.
5)Tally got mad at Shay because she didn't tell Tally about the gap in the track.

Find two similies in this chapter and quote them, as well as the page number.

1) "A shape emerged from the forest, a long spine that rose and fell like a frozen wave." pg. 63

2) "Every building sported jagged spurs of metal sticking from its broken walls, like bones jutting from a long-dead animal." pg. 62

Blog Post #10 "Rapids"

In this chapter Tally says, “I kind of like being fooled about some things.” Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?

I would rather know the reality behind everything because it is the truth and there is no hiding the truth. It is harder to lie than to tell the truth.

Find information about the origin of white water rafting and post it here, along with the website URL.

Rafting or white water rafting is a challenging recreational activity using an inflatable raft to navigate a river or other bodies of water. This is usually done on white water or different degrees of rough water, in order to thrill and excite the raft passengers. The development of this activity as a leisure sport has become popular since the mid-1970s. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rafting

Blog Post #9 "Pretty Boring"

Describe the Rusty Ruins. What are they? What happened during this time period?
The Rusty Ruins are old remains of a city built in the past when everyone was Ugly (our time). I guess people started thinking for themselves and things got out of hand.

Define peer pressure. Think of a time when it happened to you or someone you know and explain the situation in a paragraph.
Pressure from one's peers to behave in a manner similar or acceptable to them.

It happened to me in a good way. I used to be afraid about all roller coasters and would never ride them. One day my friends convinced me to ride a roller coaster at the Six Flags in Arlington. I then began to love most roller coasters(key word: most).

Blog Post #8 "Facing the Future"

Reflect on the following quotes from the chapter, what does each mean to you?

"Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun." ... "This whole game is just designed to make us hate ourselves." It means that you don't want to purposefully put yourself down.

"Everyone judged everyone else based on their appearance. People who were taller got better jobs...people killed one another over stuff like having different skin color." (referring to when everyone was ugly) The people of the future don't understand the issues that went on in the past.

"It's the only way to make people equal." (becoming pretty)
They think having everyone look the same is the only way of making sure people don't repeat the things that happened in the past.

Blog Post#7 "Wipeout"

Think of another book, movie, or comic in which people use hover boards. How are they used? If possible post a video of this.

The Jetsons. The people in the Jetsons have hovering vehicles to take them around the city.

Why do you think the new pretties don't come back to Uglyville to visit? Describe their physical & mental transformation into new pretties.

They become much prettier so they don't want to be reminded of themselves being ugly. They also feel much better about themselves so they don't want the Uglies to feel bad about themselves by seeing a Pretty.

Blog Post #6 "Shay"

Write a one paragraph summary of the chapter.

Tally escapes from the Mansion and runs toward the garden. When she is crawling through the brush, she thinks she sees a park warden. The person is actually an Ugly. Her name is Shay.

What have you learned about Shay? Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay.

Shay is an Ugly who spys on her friends who have become Pretties. She likes to sneak around. She is pretty much exactly like Tally. I think Shay will be caught in New Pretty Town and will not become a Pretty while Tally will.

Blog Post #5 "Best Friends Forever"

Why do you think New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping?

I think they advocate it so they can train people to use them in case of a fire in a party tower.

Find information about the history of bungee jumping and post it along with the website URL.

The word "bungee" (pronounced /ˈbʌndʒiː/) originates from West Country dialect, meaning "Anything thick and squat", as defined by James Jennings in his book "Observations of Some of the Dialects in The West of England" published 1825. Around 1930 the name became used for a rubber eraser. The word bungy, as used by A J Hackett, is said to be "Kiwi slang for an Elastic Strap".[4] Cloth-covered rubber cords with hooks on the ends have been available for decades under the generic name bungee cords.
In the 1950s
David Attenborough and a BBC film crew brought back footage of the "land divers" of Pentecost Island in Vanuatu, young men who jumped from tall wooden platforms with vines tied to their ankles as a test of their courage and passage into manhood.[5] A similar practice, only with a much slower pace for falling, has been practiced as the Danza de los Voladores de Papantla or the 'Papantla flyers' of central Mexico, a tradition dating back to the days of the Aztecs.
A tower 4,000 feet high with a system to drop a “car” suspended by a cable of “best rubber” was proposed for the Chicago World Fair, 1892-1893. The car, seating two hundred people, would be shoved from a platform on the tower and then bounce to a stop. The designer engineer suggested that for safety the ground below “be covered with eight feet of feather bedding”. The proposal was declined by the Fair’s organizers.
[6]

Bungee at Kawarau Bridge
The first modern bungee jumps were made on 1 April 1979 from the 250-foot
Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, by David Kirke, Chris Baker, Simon Keeling, Tim Hunt and Alan Weston of the Oxford University Dangerous Sports Club.[7] The jumpers were arrested shortly after, but continued with jumps in the US from the Golden Gate and Royal Gorge bridges, (this last jump sponsored by and televised on the American program That's Incredible) spreading the concept worldwide. By 1982 they were jumping from mobile cranes and hot air balloons. Commercial bungee jumping began with the New Zealander, A J Hackett, who made his first jump from Auckland's Greenhithe Bridge in 1986.[8] During the following years Hackett performed a number of jumps from bridges and other structures (including the Eiffel Tower), building public interest in the sport, and opening the world's first permanent commercial bungee site; the Kawarau Bridge Bungy at Queenstown in the South Island of New Zealand.[9] Hackett remains one of the largest commercial operators, with concerns in several countries.
Despite the inherent danger of jumping from a great height, several million successful jumps have taken place since 1980. This is attributable to bungee operators rigorously conforming to standards and guidelines governing jumps, such as double checking calculations and fittings for every jump. As with any sport, injuries can still occur (see below), and there have been fatalities. A relatively common mistake in fatality cases is to use a cord that is too long. The cord should be substantially shorter than the height of the jumping platform to allow it room to stretch. When the cord reaches its natural length the jumper either starts to slow down or keeps accelerating depending upon the speed of descent. One may not even start to slow until the cord has been stretched a significant amount, because the cord's resistance to distortion is zero at the natural length, and increases only gradually after, taking some time to even equal the jumper's weight. Blog Post #4 "Best Friends Forever"

Characterization: Tally

  • She is an Ugly
  • She wants to be a Pretty so she can see Peris again.
  • She can't wait to see Peris so she goes into New Pretty Town to see him.

Characterization: Peris

  • He is a Pretty.
  • Was best friends with Tally as an Ugly.
  • goes to parties all the time.

How do you feel about the friendship of Tally and Peris? Are they true best friends? Why or Why not?

I don't think they are true best friends because when she asked him if they were still friends, He said yes kind of sarcastically.

Blog Post #3 "New Pretty Town"

Find and Quote ONE oxymoron from the chapter or ONE example of irony. (Quote it directly)

"She could see New Pretty Town through her open window."

Why do you think Tally Chose to wear a mask to the party that was deemed "white tie".

She did not want people to have people know she was ugly.

Find information about the history of masks and post it. How does this relate to Tally's decision?

Masks have been designed in innumerable varieties, from the simplest of crude “false faces” held by a handle to complete head coverings with ingenious movable parts and hidden faces. Mask makers have shown great resourcefulness in selecting and combining available materials. Among the substances utilized are woods, metals, shells, fibers, ivory, clay, horn, stone, feathers, leather, furs, paper, cloth, and corn husks. Surface treatments have ranged from rugged simplicity to intricate carving and from polished woods and mosaics to gaudy adornments.Masks generally are worn with a costume, often so complete that it entirely covers the body of the wearer. Fundamentally the costume completes the new identity represented by the mask, and usually tradition prescribes its appearance and construction to the same extent as the mask itself. Costumes, like the masks, are made of a great variety of materials, all of which have a symbolic connection with the mask's total imagery. Ideally the costume should be seen with the mask while the wearer is in action. The morphological elements of the mask are with few exceptions derived from natural forms. Masks with human features are classified as anthropomorphic and those with animal characteristics as theriomorphic. In some instances, the mask form is a replication of natural features or closely follows the lineaments of reality, and in other instances it is an abstraction. Masks usually represent supernatural beings, ancestors, and fanciful or imagined figures and can also be portraits. The localization of a particular spirit in a specific mask must be considered a highly significant reason for its existence. The change in identity of the wearer for that of the mask is vital, for if the spirit represented does not reside in the image of the mask, the ritual petitions, supplications, and offerings made to it would be ineffectual and meaningless. The mask, therefore, most often functions as a means of contact with various spirit powers, thereby protecting against the unknown forces of the universe by prevailing upon their potential beneficence in all matters relative to life. http://www.anymask.com/historyofmask.html

Masks helped Tally hide her identity.

Blog Post #2 "New Pretty Town"

Have you ever had a friend like Peris who abandoned your friendship after moving? Explain.

Yes I have. My friend Ben from when I was 4 years old moved to another state. He said we couldn't be friends anymore because he was moving. It made me very sad.

Define the following terms:

1) interface ring - a ring worn by Pretties and Uglies for cars to detect where pedestrians are.

2) toothbrush pill - a pill taken by Pretties and Uglies to brush their teeth for them.

3) cacophony - a drum machine used by the Pretties for impromtu parades through the town.

Blog Post #1 "Before Reading"

How do you define beauty? What would the world be like if everyone was beautiful?

I define beauty by a character trait of a person who is happy with who they are.

Post a picture of something you find beautiful, and something you find ugly and explain the reasoning behind these choices in a paragraph.

I put the puppy on because puppies are always cute. I put the toad on because it is covered in warts.
